Why install PV Solar?

With a full solar panel system installed, you can not only immediately start to reduce your energy bills, but you could also potentially start to earn by selling any excess electricity produced that you don’t use back to the grid.

The cost to install domestic solar panels has reduced in recent years, meaning there has never been a better time to switch to solar. Make the first steps to see if solar is a suitable option for your home and you could have solar panels installed and be part of the solar revolution.

What Is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is electrical or thermal energy harvested from sunlight. Solar panels contain photovoltaic (PV) cells made up of semiconductor materials (such as silicon) to absorb elemental particles from the sun called photons. When absorbed by the panel, the photons release electrons from the atoms of the semiconductor material and the flow of these electrons within the cell creates an electric current we can direct to our circuits.

Solar panels can be placed anywhere with an abundance of sunlight, such as open fields or rooftops. The more light the panels sit exposed to, the more electricity production potential.

The sun’s constant barrage of energy in the form of photons can be collected, transformed and used to power our world—but for you, the question may be more about cost-effectiveness. Is solar efficient enough to power your home?

PV Solar Q&A's

Do Solar Panels need cleaning?

Solar panels are generally self-cleaning if positioned at an angle of 15 degrees or greater. We advise that you check every year to ensure there’s no build up of residue that needs to be removed. Most window-cleaning companies offer services that can clean your panels for a reasonable price.

Do Solar Panels require any kind of ongoing maintenance?

Other than an annual visual inspection to check for any buildup that may be hindering the efficiency of the panels, we recommend that an electrical inspection be conducted every five years from the date of installation.

Solar PV systems have an inverter which converts the direct current (DC) generated by the panels into alternating current (AC) which can be safely used in the home. Inverters typically have a lifespan of 10-15 years depending on the make and model, and will need to be replaced at some point.

Solar panels have no moving parts, which means that your system is relatively maintenance free and guaranteed for 25-30 years.

How do I go about insuring my Solar Panels?

The vast majority of insurers consider solar panels to be part of the fabric of the building, so they would not incur an extra charge on your policy. In rare cases, some providers will increase the cost of your policy when you get panels installed.

How long will my Solar Panels last for?

Solar PV systems have no moving parts other than the inverter, and as such have very long life spans.

The inverter should last for more than 10 years, and may cost £1,000 or less to replace, depending on the model required to support the panels installed.

An extended, 10-year warranty is often offered by the installer prior to fitting, or can be directly arranged with the inverter manufacturer upon completion of the installation if required. This extends the warranty from the standard 5 years up to 10 years in total.

Panels should last more than 25 years with performance guarantees in place to ensure a satisfactory level of performance for at least the first 20 years in most cases.

How do Solar Panels connect to the electrical supply in my home?

Once the solar panels have produced energy by converting sunlight in the form of a direct current (DC), this needs to be converted into an alternating current (AC) before it can be safely used in the home. The inverter’s AC cables will then carry that energy to your mains distribution board, after which it can be used to power your home.

Will my Solar Panels still work if there is a power cut?

If you experience a power cut that directly affects your home, your inverter will automatically switch off, preventing energy from entering the property. This is a safety feature to protect workers who may be repairing the grid. However, there are back-up systems such as home storage batteries that can enable you to use stored energy in case of a power cut.

If I have Solar Panels can I come off grid?

As solar PV panels produce electricity solely in daylight hours, this doesn’t generate enough energy to power the home for a 24-hour period. To power the house at night without the need to draw from the national grid, you would need alternative energy sources such as a home storage battery in combination with a solar PV system. Most solar PV installations for domestic properties in the UK, however, are not generally configured to enable complete off-grid functionality. This is mainly because AC current is drawn from the grid to help maintain power to the solar PV system’s inverter. During the evening, most homes will require a small amount of AC power from the grid in order to function correctly.

How will my Solar Panels be guaranteed?

Solar panels come with their own manufacturer’s warranty or guarantee of craftsmanship that cover the build quality of the panels themselves. A performance warranty is then included in these guarantees. Different manufacturers offer different guarantees, with better levels of protection usually applied to more expensive panels. Check the proposed guarantee before purchasing.

The inverter, which forms a vital part of your solar PV system, will have its own warranty. This warranty covers build quality and claims against breakdown. As with solar panels, there are a range of warranties on offer, so it pays to shop around.

Finally, the installation work for solar panels and the system itself are covered by a separate guarantee provided by the installer. Different aspects of the installation may be covered for different lengths of time, but usually the everything is covered for a set duration post-installation
